2 Million Minutes and 1.13 billion people

This is after watching a documentary screened first time in India at IIT Madras "2 Million Minutes". Produced by Bob Compton, the documentary and various clips screened world wide is about cross examination of education system and trends in India, China and US.

It was very interesting to see how culture differences impact a lot in the ambition and outlook of children. At times I wondered how bad/good is our system compared to other countries in education. Similar thoughts were expressed in previous posts about differences in systems of education in India one year back. The point I understood after this nice video was that, for undergraduate education; somehow the curriculum is good. We knowingly or unknowingly study foundation subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics mainly whereas in US it's insignificant.
When coming to higher education, that is major trouble for our system. We study things mainly of interests of others. We do not choose anything, but merely follow what we see in our vicinity, what our parents/elders/ neighbors are. We hardly analyze at age of 21 or above, what we our heart wants. Probably that is what is lacking in the system. We need better reformers and campaigns from people who proved the best in the world who are Indians to make others know the value of "making our own decisions and learn from failures rather than simply fail and give up" culture.

Is it OK?

This time topic is about a simple thing. Often simple/silly things are more annoying. I bought 2 trousers from Pantaloon factory outlet. The bottom has to be altered before using it. The rate of alteration at that shop was 10INR. But tailor was on leave, so because of laziness to go again I took the pants. There is a small tailoring shop near the gate where I have given it for alteration. The tailor did not mention any rates. Naturally my assumption was that, it must not be greater than Showroom rates.

Pantaloon AD-Embedded from http://www.pantaloon.com/fashion-top10.asp

Rest you can guess if I am writing the post. When I went there for getting pants back, the rate told was 20INR per pants. "It's ridiculous", I replied to the tailor. He said "this is normal rate". It's normal for him, but quite abnormal for me.
There were 2 more clothes I have given for patch work. Total it was 60 and he said "OK, give 50INR". I was quite annoyed. After a dare look at him I gave money and said "this kind of Plundering won't bring any good to you".
That was a curse. It came from the anger. It's not because I was not ready to give money, but because I never felt a 2 minute job for him with hardly a rupee investment can take 20INR. It's Chennai, metro city. Still I felt that there is a limit something can be priced.

There are so many occasion where you spend money, which is extravaganza. Like, I can eat food from my home where making 4 chapatis and curry will take 20 minutes and hardly 20INR. Same thing, in * hotel will take 30INR and may not be as good as you make it at home. Plus waiting time is around 20 minutes.
If it's **, waiting time and bill rate increases. Question is "why I am not annoyed in that occasion but got annoyed by this simple thing?"

From sharavanabhavan site http://www.saravanabhavan.com/

I don't know. Instead of being angry, giving a curse; I should have told the tailor that "get a pant from Pantaloon for your son and keep this extra 10 for alteration of that".
Curse is always disturbance to both parties... Next time , hop I will do the other way.

Hurt enough to feel it's presence

Any guess about the theme I am going to discuss, from it's title? Let me guess. You may be guessing that someone got hurt, perhaps me. Also about the pain of that wound. You are right. But this is something more. I was thinking how much effort is there to make things NORMAL which I ignore normally. Now you may be asking me, what the h... happened which made me think like that? Or what is not normal now?
As I said, I got hurt. Hurt enough to feel it's presence. I mean, the presence of my big toe. ( thanks to goole in helping me 2 find the right word- big toe). I never realized that so much effort was done by that "big toe" along with others which made me walk normal. I was playing shuttle badminton and while saving one drop near the net, it supported my whole body weight for a second along with my left hand and got twisted. And now after 24 hours, it still pains. It's just an announcement, a notification to me that "I have done enough work to make you stand/walk properly" and you did nto notice my efforts. Now you see, I can't do my work for a couple of days, you feel that it's painful".

Well, it's same everywhere. When somebody get hurts (s)he first tries to hide it. But all on a sudden sometimes it comes out to hurt others. Sometimes it will be simple enough that, if you treat properly for a day or two that wound will go off till next time (s)he got hurts. At times it can create total chaos also. Same feeling came when I saw movies AAmir and A Wednesday. Both tell us how people can act differently when get hurt. If they are hurt enough to feel the presence for others, it can pain others, can change the "NORMAL" state of working to a chaotic one.
For my finger, I could figure out a rest of two days MAY heal it. But human minds may not work in that way. Even in case of family situations I personally feelits same. When a member is reacting (or acting) indifferently; is blaming a better option over trying to find out what is going on behind screens and avoid such incidents later.
You are partially right if you guessed that I am trying to discuss the Mumbai
massacre . It could be the same.
( People cool off at popular Chowpatty Beach, with the Nariman Point business district in the distance :Courtsy National Geographic)
(Gateway of India: It was so calm and so beautiful when I took this photo)

Someone got hurt and the response was totally abnormal for us. Thinking in this line tells me that healing the wounds is what we should look forward ( which obviously is a herculean task when there are people who always tries to take gain over the situation- like cutting the branch of tree (s)he is sitting)
Now the million dollar question... who got hurt?

Fwd... Perfect letter to PM

[disclaimer: I am not the author of this letter. It came to me as a forwarded message. But Liked it very much. This I plan to follow up with a new post on my own views of current incidents]

Dear Mr. Prime minister,

I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local train compartment which has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse. Mouse at least squeak but we don't even do that.

Today I heard your speech. In which you said 'NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED'. I would like to remind you that fourteen years has passed since serial bomb blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main
conspirator. Till today he is not caught. All our bollywood actors, our builders, our Gutka king meets him but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple; all your ministers are hand in glove with him.
If any attempt is made to catch him everybody will be exposed. Your statement 'NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED' is nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate people of India.

Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attack carried out by about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing continues days are not away when terrorist will attack by air, destroy our nuclear
reactor and there will be one more Hiroshima. We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You promised Mumbaikar Shanghai what you have given us is Jalianwala Baug.

Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick out this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi family. Loyalty to Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent
people, isn't it?

I am born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the politician, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal
Thackray , Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money. Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief minister I have seen. His only business is to increase the FSI every
other day, make money and send it to Delhi so Congress can fight next election. Now the clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fisherman so they can build concrete house right on sea shore. Next
time terrorist can comfortably live in those house , enjoy the beauty of sea and then attack the Mumbai at their will.

Recently I had to purchase house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI you and your
finance minister are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? To the underworld isn't it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time
please come to me, I will tell you everything.

If this has been land of fools, idiots then I would not have ever cared to write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side we are reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side you politician has converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, Creamy Schedule caste only what I am not is INDIAN. You politician have raped every part of mother India by your policy of divide and rule.

Take example of former president Abdul Kalam. Such a intelligent person, such a fine human being. You politician didn't even spare him. Your party along with opposition joined the hands, because politician
feels they are supreme and there is no place for good person.

Dear Mr Prime minister you are one of the most intelligent person, most learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR. First and foremost expose all selfish politician. Ask Swiss bank to give name of
all Indian account holder. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find wolf among us. There will be political upheaval but that will better than dance of death which we are witnessing every day.
Just give us ambient where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of law. Everything else will be taken care of.

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?

About short Journeys

I do not know when I started liking short journeys...
I used to travel for an hour or so from my village to town. At first, it was boring. Too much rush as it's only bus which reaches city at around 8.30. The add on advantage is that massaging comes free with it.

This was the time I realised that I can not do anything but sleep and fall in to shoulder of next person sitting beside me( getting a seat is a rare case... so people are lucky enough not to carry my head during their travel). Better options were to see whether some charming faces turns up, each time the bus stops or to kill the person standing beside me with my talk. That also became boring after some time. Things changed, when search was for something else. That became the best time to observe what others are doing. The subject of their discussion or the way in which they talk or watching the little children crossing the road, new construction work by PWD (public waste department) doing destruction work for the road sides. There were days where I saw trees cut down and new buildings coming up. Also it's fun to watch people struggling to get out of the bus through the rush, making pain to people standing on the way.

hmmm, that kind of travel makes me feel I am living. You can not engage in your official work/studies nor can do play any games. That is the time I can just think.
Such trips helped to perceive moments of life.
More better way to say/see it is "each journey is different" and beautiful in one way or the other, so as each day, each moment of my life.

A thought on Teacher's Day

"The aim of education is not the acquisition of information, although important, or acquisition of technical skills, though essential in modern society, but the development of that bent of mind, that attitude of reason, that spirit of democracy which will make us responsible citizens."
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

I am wondering how much it's true after several decades. In fact teaching, regarded as prestigious job and great service to society and formal education, believed to be an achievement irrespective of the work done. As in other post "is quality or culture dropping" , where I was pointing out, it's not the quality drops. It's the culture which does not seem to exist now.
But today in this post I wanted to tell something different. I was attending the classes of linear algebra. May be because of late night bed habits or the presentation style is too abstract for me, I was unable to follow many things taught in the class. The professor was trying to push enthusiasm to learn it, make it as tool for our works. Still I missed continuity in the lecture. Hmm it's not a unique situation. Just before writing this post, I was talking to my old student Nisha, who was telling me "its a great opportunity and life time achievement to be a part of IIT" . I was asking her back; why can't she be a part of that. She is working, so as most of other students of mine. I expected a usual response of "not interested to study more....... or I wish I could, but no time" . Instead I got an answer, "next year.. If god decides so". That was a joyfull moment. In situations where people go for work and can not go to a common place and learn, seems impossible. And to get in to IIT is a tough job. ( IITans say going out is more tougher , lol )
What I am talking is an alternative to learn things in more efficient way. If you miss continuity, or if you wish to learn subject but in a time convenient to you what you can try.
It's a different trend altogether in method of teaching/learning process. People who started thinking in positive lines about this problem of quality and culture, has found excellent solutions. With the help of technology, it's possible now to study subjects from people who make that a passion. I am talking about the internet archives and discussion forums coming up in world wide basis, to collaborate and learn in better ways. Other universities, following the MIT culture to share their resources for other parts of the world. In this way we see a paradigm shift in the teaching learning process. India has launched NPTEL and Ekalavya channel following these lines of thought. Wikipedia has started wikiversity and wikibooks for the same reason
Here are a few links which gives out free resources
I request you to encourage such learning process and contribute to movements like wikis for collaborative learning.
so what we lack now? It's propogation of this to common people. The Information Technology tool is like an unpolished jewel. Polish it well and keep it open to common people. Let's propogate the new trend to make it a success so that vision of our great leaders including our former president, Dr A P J Abdulkalam can be achieved.

Suicides are Homicides of Society

Dear reader
This is again about Suicide in IIT. Now at IIT Kanpur. And it's not a partly cooked up story this time, but a real time chat with my student manish and as per his wish, its posted as such
May be its so long, but its my blog and you are free to read it or skip........
(Excuse me for editing a few lines to hide the personal details of others involved )

me: so vodooo
whats up at home? any more paintings?
8:10 PM manish: hello sir !!
not really ...
ohh btw ..i forgot to upload my painting >>!!
i ll do it ..

was reading this ...
manish: http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/IIT-girl-commits-suicide-hours-before-convocation/316975/
8:12 PM me:oh that story is really stupid, cooked up may b
i mean the suicide
manish: hmm ..jus imagine her fathers state
its a NEWS
not a story !
me: really coz of failing in 2 sub, make a girl suicide?
8:15 PM manish: and nyways ...one of my frnds ..gave me the news
on fone . shez at iitk
8:16 PM read the comments !
me: hmm reading
8:17 PM but does it match atleast to what i wrote? the situations here?
manish: lolz ob not .. but it culd b
8:18 PM some other factors as wel but then . the suicide not . note *
clearly says ..it was the failure in the last sem xams .. that made her attempt suicide
me: may b, but think about the side of professor or , let me post it as another blog lol
8:20 PM manish: haha yeah sure .. that wuld b interesting !
me: no one other version f the same story ; as a teacher, the most iritating thing u know, is to teach the ppl of finl sem..i really wanted at times, to ban the whole campus placement bulshit
manish: hahah :D
me: the students have feeling that they are in some other level
manish: understandable ! :D lolz
8:22 PM me: 90% of dem does not even care about any classes and again there s pressure in the professor
i wont blame a prof putting a grade worth for a student who does bad and deserve only E or F
manish: aree everything is .. understandable .but FAILING A STUDENT IN THE LAST SEM and withholding his/her degree how fair is that ?
me: that s as a student
manish: cmon ..the gal .DID PASS ALL THE SUBJECTS in the past 3 1/2 years right?
me: do yu believe that the companies HR managers gave feedbacks saying that
manish: he could have given a E ?
8:24 PM me: the moment we give offer letter at sem 6/7 , we find quality and enthu of studying has gone from students, which we clearly wont expect... that attitude is realy killing, but we r n need of 1000, when available is 100 ...
8:25 PM manish: that is K ! but still u CANNOT justify ....
8:26 PM me: my question is why do she fall in last sem
manish: withholding a person s degree
me: why she was not even eligible for A
manish: hey cmon ..
me: or B
manish: its NOT always ..abt the student !
me: why compromize in last se for E
manish: no ..btw ..being frm BIO SCIENCES .. i dont think ..it was the case of getting lax after gettin her placement sumtimes...u just cant help!
me: there is some other thing wrong
manish: ohh ..u r taught 48 subjects in 4 yrs !
me: so like others
manish: u cant like ALL THE SUBJECTS ! ohh cmon ...the same prof wuld have FAILED OTHER STUDENTS AS WELL!
me: still all 48 sub, i bet are bearable to get an average marks , if u try
manish: just that ..she committed sucide . so ..has to face all the limelght !
me: its only a reason she wrote.....dere are a lot more gone wrong before this
manish: yeah ! ABSOLUTELY ! it wasnt just this ONE THING wich wuld have made her ...
8:29 PM me: c , dere s an incident where i might have saved a girl's life
manish: give away her life !
manish: hmm ?
me: as a teacher, i know how student s ... hw (s)he shld respond to a question i ask it can be better but if its worse than i expect
8:30 PM means, something going wrong... i was doing a viva voce and i asked 2 questions, she ddnt said a singl word in reply...
8:31 PM i said something like this.. "well we will talk later.... i wan 2 c u right after the lab....u r not seems to b k"
now am givn u a grade which s average ....go and relax that was S8 student
manish: hmm ..
8:32 PM me: what she told was bit ......she said its 3 months since she called home...
manish: OMG
8:33 PM me: and at home dey fixed her mariage evn she dont wan 2 do dat either. she dont want to hurt that person, who supposed 2 marry her... dat also she dont know to continue by just ditching de family.. literally she was crying
8:34 PM manish: ohh
me: u know dis s the same for an average family... basically a middle class family will always think in dis line only
8:35 PM manish: hmm
8:37 PM me: I asked her to go for a counselling and for my relief ; she agreed & hmm, dat story had a happy ending, she got married toa person who makes lakhs per month... now well settled. Both working..
manish: hmm lolz lolz
me: hmm, may b in diff situation think, if i just gave her internal marks of what she deserve from that lab xam
and no counselling
manish: hmm right that wat i wish to point out..
me: u c, failing in xams is only result
manish: the profs never knw of wat a student mayb goinng thru on a personal
me: of something lse going wrong
8:41 PM manish: i guess ..an excuse . once or twice .. is possible ofcorse ..no1 is asking to award an A but u can atleast do by .. giving the minimum passing grade! and yup ..
me: if she screwed up all.........coz of some reason lije tis, messed up with prof
8:42 PM manish: as the comments say .. the profs ..almost NEVER CARE abt nything but .. how well u do in xam .. i know of profs .. who failed a guy ..in his final sem xams jus coz ...the prof came to know .
8:43 PM of his MBA PLANS ! he was a chemical guy . the prof ..thrashed him during his final sem project presentation.. the prof said.. i kno u have other plans .but i wont let u off soo easily ..
8:44 PM he rather branded him a TRAITOR ~! the prof was ..pissed beyond boudaries ..that after availing the best
chemical education in the country he was .... going to pursue na MBA ! lolz that delayed his degree for a YEAR ! jus imagine the frustation ....of the guy ?.
8:45 PM well ..btw in this case .he boldly stood up ..and QUIT the IIT it was IIT KGP he doesnt has an IIT degree ..!! and is a freelance WRITER ! these days !>. i ll pass on his blog link to u sumtime :)
me: hmm
8:46 PM manish: and yes he is veryyy SUCCESSFUL ! today ! and feels ...he did the right thing !
me: being successful in life has nothing to do with DEGREE from IIT r any fucking insti
manish: EXACTLY ! but then ..such kinda happening .. seem to b a routine
8:47 PM me: u know, if she has passed that one moment of suicide
manish: in some of the IITs ? happenings*
me: she may b one who cant b defeated
manish: i know that ! its just ONE WEAK MOMENT ! if u can hold thru that ..
me: the darkest hour comes before sunrise
8:48 PM if it get off, u know u r better than that moment at any other point of ur life that wisdom can bring a lot more than what u could b
manish: hmm but then ..not every1 is strong enuf .. but does thaat justify ..
me: i shall blame the system again
8:49 PM manish: losing a precious life ! yeah ..read the comments ..
me: not iit bullshit
manish: they have just started pouring in ..
me: see these shouts last for a few weeks
manish: the IITians r pointing out the same !
me: especially in iit am telling about whole society
8:50 PM manish: hmm rite.
me: at first its parents to tell child that winning a certificate is everything ; dey will b screwed not geting degree for child dan losing her who is putting pressure here at first ; the parents their prestige deir ego
manish: mayb NOT ! how can u say .its the parents ? more often than NOT .. its NOT the parents !
me: my father said, its not winning , but the attitude to win s more important
8:52 PM if my parents never said, let u fail , only suffer u for a while , u have years left to make a more succefull life i might not have gone to engg so first u need is faith that ppl will accept u as U , even if u did somehting wrong
8:53 PM manish: hmm rite
me: "something wrong" s not going to b with u alll the life, u shld realise, u could be better dats called faith in society faith in the system am living
8:54 PM that s what a parent/a teacher/ a friend has to ensure to each one dey are interacting
8:55 PM its not the grades, not the fortune company job, or other f** shits so important
manish: hmm .. right .!!
now jus copy paste .and that would make a wonderful blog entry !
me: its feeling that, am me, and if i do wrong, i could b better and who ever with me will suport me
8:57 PM me: well, u really wan me to post this as such ... a conversation?
manish: u can !

you are patient enough to read the whole story, to reach this line. If so thank you very much.

free talks are not so "FREE".. (inspired from movie Before SunRise )

Well; dear reader.

This time its some what unspoken things ( or may b I am oustspoken)
Yet I felt, I should write about it. Wondering what the hell is this !!!!
If you have not watched movie "before sunrise" please do watch it.
Here is a quote from it.

Guy...."But being with you...it's made me feel like I was somebody else.I mean, the only other way to lose yourself like that is..you know, dancing...or alcohol...or drugs, or stuff like that".
Guy...."Fucking, yeah. That's one way."

For the people who did not watch it, its a conversation between a male and a female who met in train, got down at a station and was talking about what is called "FREE TALK"

Okay, let us come back. As a viewer of the movie, you will really enjoy it; you admit its one of the best romantic movies. Even if you have not seen the movie, you may accept , its coming from free flowing mind. Ask yourself a question here, how many of you have the guts to talk like this?
I have seen many people "so called best friends, or blah blah........". Yet if it's a male and a female, at least people around me; I hardly seen/heard of any one.

Now it's about much more simpler things about "free talk"
I happened to hear some warnings in this regard especially when I was teaching and major section was of girls. "Gireesh, be careful while talking. There are people who may take it in the other way if you talk more, to them. It's eazy to get a bad name". I was wondering, I did not even talk anything like above, but even talking to girl students; can make bad name for me.

As a teacher I used to spend a lot of time with people who accept my company, I do not eve care it's girl/guy. If it's not in a campus or in official hours, at times it may be personal and I may talk freely of my view about anything in this world. At times after the conversation; I get comments from my students saying that "sir, we all enjoyed and we know very well ;this freedom is only for this much moment. Tomorrow in class you won't be like this". The same person who enjoyed talking freely(lol - again freely) may advice me like above in starting of this paragraph; if (s)he was not there in part of another conversation.
So, what do you think wrong with people? The same people accept the first few lines/the film turns back to be in the other way!!!! If so, who is putting the mask by saying "I can talk anything freely to you"
If you think I am right, please do comment

See you in your comments
and Will be back with another thought in some other time
Till then
Bubye and Take care

Good morning/Afternoon/Eve dear reader

Let's travel in Chennai metro from Tidal Park/Thiruvanmiyoor to Thirumalai. Hardly 10/12 minutes.
I sat on the window seat, and saw the orange sun going down the dawn. Looking in to that in silence, I wondered; how much the sun rise and set inspires me.

A voice broke the silence "What is there to look at? Girls from Tidel Park? ". Oh I sat like that nearly 2 minutes. "Hm thank you for waking me up. Sorry for boring silence; after inviting you to the journey". "you are welcome. which is the book you read recently, Gireesh?" . "Oh its Notes to myself by Hugh Prather". "What sort of ...?" "It's sort of diary, his writings since he married; and published". "Anything attractive?" "Oooh , ya.. Did not finish it till now, but some of the notes make me feel like I have written it for myself....Hmm..... . when ever I see I am doing it wrong, a part of me wants to keep on doing it in the same way and even starts looking for reasons to justify the continuation".
"What is wrong now? " "Oh, its not mine, its from that book. You know, I read it and became silent for an hour or so. What do you think about these lines?". "May be true. It's you who said, you were in silence for hours, so you tell Gireesh, what you were thinking"
"Hmm, well..... It took me to the quotes of Gandhiji and Alexander Pope. Do you know why it's so peculiar? It gives pain, a lot of pain , not when others see you guilty; but you feel yourself guilty. It actually matches with the lines of Hugh. Even if you feel, you are wrong; at times some thing in you still make you do that. Matters goes worse, when you cross your own ethical believes by doing so. It may bring down your own self esteem, your confidence in you..."
"Oh!! Gireesh... I seldom saw you speaking negative. Why so peculiar about this subject?"
"Hmm... you felt this is negative. Let me finish dear. What I meant is, when you stand in such a situation; you see failures around you. You visualize people laughing at you. People who cared you, saying -I did not expect this from you .. . And you close yourself. You try to forget about the incidents, try to run away from that. Is that all over? May not be. There I saw a different meaning of Gandhiji's quote(or re statement of Jesus Christ's words ; thanks to jeslin for correcting me ) :- hate the sin, but love the sinner. Means try to get back the original you; not to bury you. After all ,as Pope said: -to err is human; and to forgive is divine-your divine part of mind should forgive you; so as the people who care you"
"Oh Gireesh..... I have to take back the word that you went negative.. hmm I too agree. Well let me try to forgive the sin of killing me with your thoughts. We are about to get down. see you another day with another thought. Bye"
"Bye bye my dear reader. Thanks for spending time with me. Meet you some other time. Be prepared to forgive me, because I may do it again and again. Lol ;=) "

joy of teaching

gdm/gdaf/geve dear reader
I was thinking, what was actually a joy of a teacher? Is it simply a thing like, my student reaches heights, which make me pride? Or is it something like he/she is happily earning and make a living( this make me remember of the saying that "give me a fish, sir ; I will eat for a day. TEACH me how to fish, I will eat for a life time" ). Or is it simply a joy to convey what I know to my students, to use them or not in their future, does not make sense to me!! Is it an inspiration given to the students, to love the subjects I loved?
For me, I guess I have more than these ....... The joy of teaching comes more better not when the student get good marks or got placed in a company or so.. Obviously it's memorable and a kind of joy, I agree.
But there is more to it. I feel that joy more, when my student ; after the long struggles and facing near failures; realizes the concepts as in like a baby walking steadily without support for a distance for first time.
It's the same smile I had years back. The realization of what many walked before him/her enjoyed.
Once a student has such a smile, I will be more happy when he/she improvises it to see the world more better, to interpret the non spoken language of the world.

is it quality or culture which is dropping?

good morning/afternoon/eve dear reader

This time, its about IITM life after 2 months. 2 Weeks back there was a suicide and the guy was from CS department. I was attending the condolence meeting and the discussions thereafter. There were professors and students from B-Tech and Masters. B-Tech students expressed their frustration openly.
The talk was like "Computer Science is the only branch where we run our own lab at hostel room". What ever activity is there in campus, you hardly find a CS guy because, the programming assignments and lab assignments; can kill your time like anything. We do not know the spelling; you ask us to write stories".

On another occasion a senior professor was telling, "as time passes; the quality of students coming also get reduced".

The third occasion was yesterday's examination. I was attending an examination of a so called "best professor" in the department. Some1 call him "the best paper award". Statistics says he is most active in publication in international journals. In the exam there were 4 questions. 2 from his own book ( you find that kind of notations and unique algorithms in his book only. Search in the net; it will still point to his book: No other refer this/no one use this ;or more optimistically it may the best future technology") .The 2 other questions I do not understand well. After examination a search in the google gave me the questions and solution set from a site by the second author of the book( who is also a professor now).
You may be wondering what is the catch? The catch is "at least in some courses" as I know directly "plagiarism" exist. You want to score, get those "plugging web sites". Professors asks PhD student not to do it. But I guess they do not have to tell this. They just have to show the best examples from their community. But do not expect that in IIT students reveal how to find such sites. They won't. That is the culture built in the IIT system.
The same discussion of suicide, they were mentioning about such islands. Professors were replying, saying that you people are doing things together, there should be team efforts, you should share the ideas. Lol, thank god that they do not telecast the subject discussion , to decide about coming semester courses. As far as I heard, If they do it, it can make a local fish market person run away deciding not to go to sea again.
You may be wondering.; why all these incidents. What is the co relation.
The point here is, "It is utter stupidity; to blame that X's Quality is dropping" in due time. ( X means either prof/student ).Quality is always there. But coherence and mindset is not there. It's painful for me to write like this; because I was a teacher for 3.5 years; a job I like most despite many drawbacks. The educational system is failing not because quality is dropping. It is because the system is running out of order.

The aim of a teacher in IIT in early time was not to be famous in publishing paper day by day. They loved their subject, they showed the students how to fall in love with the subject. They hardly worried about money. They were happy with the position they hold. It was so in many old teachers. A student's aim was to learn more. Get better insight to subject they love. They choose their area and work to come up with new results. Industries loved such students, because of the culture they have. But what is now? Students say, "prof teach what ever they want; we study get grades; we are paid the best". Means, there was a culture existed; which was healthy for students and for the teachers. That system vanished.
The painful thing is not for those who changed; but it is for those who looked for the lost culture. If you are a student who looked for that culture, you may even suicide. If you are a professor; you may resign and get out.
This time no questions to the reader, no comments from me also. But you can think about it, if not for you may be for your kids ( the coming generation)

Bubye and have a nice time
